ABP invested 4 million (US $5.8 million dollars) in the construction of the market-leading facility that was built for Wallenius Wilhelmsen Lines in Southampton’s Eastern Docks as part of a 10-year deal between the two companies. The five-level terminal provides the equivalent of almost five hectares of car storage on a footprint of approximately one hectare and can accommodate up to 3,120 cars at any one time. The terminal features the latest car-handling safety mechanisms and computer technologies, such as a bar-coding system that scans cars as they enter the terminal and provides tighter controls over inventory.
Wallenius Wilhelmsen Lines major customers at ABP Southampton include BMW MINI, Honda, Jaguar, Gefco (Peugeot), Land Rover, and MG Rover cars that are exported to the US, Asia and Australia, while BMW and Ford are imported also through Southampton. Medite Shipping will transport container traffic from the Port of Felixstowe to Hams Hall Railfreight Distribution Terminal in Birmingham. The service, which will initially operate on a twice-weekly basis in conjunction with GB Railfreight, will employ class-66 locomotive and 60-ft flat wagons. Rail plays a central role in ABP Connect s vision of supplying a seamless, comprehensive logistics package to customers.
This new service demonstrates our increasing ability to achieve this goal, and I look forward to developing a very successful relationship with both GB Railfreight and Medite Shipping. This service, which gives us mainline access to the West Coast, is a welcome addition to our existing East Coast service, offering a unique hook-and-haul facility, which will greatly increase efficiency. Hams Hall, located in the heart of the Midlands, is the ideal location for us to expand our existing routes.
